New Fraunhofer study details multi- versus single-MPPT inverters

View Webinar Video

PV inverter manufacturer Kaco has quantified the compatibility problems of multi-MPPT inverters and high-performance modules in their own study. In this pv magazine Webinar, our speakers will present new research results on the use of multi-MPPT versus single-MPPT inverters and explain why string inverters with only one MPPT do not have such problems compared to multi-MPPT inverters.

New Fraunhofer study details multi- versus single-MPPT inverters

In this pv magazine webinar, Andreas Hensel, Team Leader Power Electronics for Medium Voltage at Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, will present new research results on the use of multi-MPPT versus single-MPPT inverters.

Maximum power point trackers (MPPTs) in photovoltaic inverters are designed to find the optimal power point and thus maximise the yield of a system. In varying conditions, where non-homogeneous strings operate together, it makes sense to use multi-MPPT inverters to refine the result. However, multi-MPPT inverters typically have lower efficiency than single-MPPT inverters due to the additional conversion stage. This means the industry-thinking towards default usage of multi-MPPT may not be the best result for efficiency.

The Fraunhofer ISE study suggests that the benefits of multi-MPPT are negligible in certain cases. Many of the latest high-performance modules are either not at all compatible with multi-MPPT devices or project developers would have to accept compromises in the flexibility of the structure.

PV inverter manufacturer Kaco has quantified the compatibility problems of multi-MPPT inverters and high-performance modules in their own study. Boban Vujovic, Product Lifecycle Management and Ronak Shah, Head of Offers & Applications, will explain why string inverters with only one MPPT do not have such problems.

Speakers

Boban Vujovic | Product Lifecycle Management, Kaco new energy

Boban Vujovic is an electrical engineer with a focus on renewable energies. He has been working at KACO since 2015 with various responsibilities in service and in technical sales. He has been part of the Product Lifecycle Management team since 2019 and is responsible for the further development of both photovoltaic and storage string inverters.

Andreas Hensel | Team Leader Medium Voltage Power Electronics, Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems

Andreas Hensel has a degree in electrical engineering and information technology. He specializes in power electronics for renewable energies with silicon carbide semiconductors. As a scientist and project manager at Fraunhofer ISE, he has already managed various research and industrial projects for the characterization of power semiconductors, for hardware development with SiC and GaN components for low-voltage applications and for the development of power electronics for medium-voltage applications.

Ronak Shah | Head of Offers & Applications, Kaco new energy

Ronak holds master’s degree in New Energy Technologies from TU Berlin. Ronak joined KACO in 2016 as Technical Sales Manager supporting various countries for technical and commercial offers and PV plant design. Currently, he is heading the same team called Offers & Applications which focuses on developing applications to offer a complete solution to customers.
